What is a Select Committee?
Select Committees consider policy issues, scrutinise the work and expenditure of the government, and examine proposals for primary and secondary legislation.
In The Current Parliament
Chris is a member of the following Select Committees.
Procedure Committee (2020 - present)
The Procedure Committee considers the practice and procedure of the House in the conduct of its public business. It is appointed under Standing Order No. 147. It can make recommendations to the House about the operation of the House’s Standing Orders for public business, and any other aspect of House procedure and practice (as generally described in Erskine May).
Panel of Chairs (2020 - present)
The Panel of Chairs comprises the Chairman and two Deputy Chairmen of Ways and Means, who are members ex officio, and not fewer than ten Members nominated at the beginning of each session by the Speaker. Members of the Panel are appointed by the Speaker to chair Public Bill Committees and other general committees. They may also chair debates in Westminster Hall and act as temporary chairs of Committees of the whole House. The Panel is chaired by the Chairman of Ways and Means.
Committee on the Future Relationship with the European Union (2020 - present)
The Committee on the Future Relationship with the European Union is appointed by the House of Common to examine matters relating to the negotiations on the future relationship with the European Union.
Environmental Audit Committee (2020 - present)
Welcome to the Environmental Audit Committee's website. The Committee's remit is to consider the extent to which the policies and programmes of government departments and non-departmental public bodies contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development, and to audit their performance against sustainable development and environmental protection targets.

Privileges Committee (2017 - 2019)
The Committee of Privileges is appointed to consider specific matters relating to privileges referred to it by the House.
Standards Committee (2017 - 2019)
The Committee on Standards was appointed on 13 December 2012 by the House of Commons following its separation from the former Committee on Standards and Privileges to:
- oversee the work of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards
- examine the arrangements proposed by the Commissioner for the compilation, maintenance and accessibility of the Register of Members' Financial Interests and any other registers of interest established by the House
- review from time to time the form and content of those registers
- consider any specific complaints made in relation to the registering or declaring of interests referred to it by the Commissioner
- consider any matter relating to the conduct of Members, including specific complaints in relation to alleged breaches in the Code of Conduct which have been drawn to the Committee's attention by the Commissioner
- recommend any modifications to the Code of Conduct as may from time to time appear to be necessary.
Home Affairs Committee (2017 - 2019)
The Home Affairs Committee is one of the departmental select committees, the powers of which are set out in House of Commons Standing Orders, principally in SO No 152.
The Committee consists of 11 Members of Parliament, drawn from the three largest political parties. The House of Commons appoints the Committee with the task of examining the expenditure, administration, and policy of the Home Office and its associated public bodies.
The Committee chooses its own subjects of inquiry and seeks written and oral evidence from a wide range of relevant groups and individuals. At the end of an inquiry the Committee will often produce a report setting out its findings and making recommendations to the Government. The Government must respond to each of the report’s recommendations within two months of publication.
Existing The European Union Committee (2017 - 2019)
The Exiting the European Union Committee is appointed by the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Department for Exiting the European Union and matters falling within the responsibilities of associated public bodies.

The Procedure Committee considers the practice and procedure of the House in the conduct of public business. Mr Charles Walker MP is the Chair of the Committee.
